How to Get Interval Data From Green Mountain Power

How Vermont contractors and homeowners request 12 months of 15-minute smart-meter data from Green Mountain Power for an NEC 220.87 load calculation, with a copy-and-paste email.

Green Mountain Power (GMP) releases smart-meter interval data to the account holder on request. For an NEC 220.87 load calculation you want 12 to 13 months of 15-minute data, which is enough to capture both the winter and the summer peak.

The process

  1. Give your customer the email below.
  2. The customer sends it to GMP from their own email address, copying you, so GMP knows where to send the file.
  3. GMP sends the data file, typically within a business day.
  4. Upload the file to TrueLoad.

The request needs to come from the account holder, which is why the customer sends it rather than you.

Subject: AMI Data Request

Dear Green Mountain Power Energy Innovation Team,

Please provide 12-13 months of the most recent 15-minute interval AMI data for my electric account. Compatible formats include: csv, txt, xml, or Excel. This data will be used by my contractor for load calculations.

Service Address: [Property Address]

Please let me know if you require any additional information. Thank you for your assistance.

Once you have the file

Check that it covers a full year and that the home was occupied throughout. If the customer has solar, confirm whether the file shows total consumption or net usage, because net-metered data understates the load. The general guide to getting and reading interval data covers these checks.

In Vermont, the Chief State Electrical Inspector has described NEC 220.87 as "an acceptable means of calculating an existing service load."

Other Vermont utilities

The same request works elsewhere with the right contact. Ask the utility's customer service for their AMI or interval data request process. Not every utility releases data directly to contractors. If yours does not, contact TrueLoad support for alternatives.

Contact details and turnaround are as of the date above and can change. If the address bounces, call GMP customer service and ask for the AMI data request process.

Put it into practice

TrueLoad runs the measured-demand calculation from the utility's interval data, or the traditional calculation when there is none, and produces the report. Your first project is free.
